The Iapelli or Japelli are a Bolognese town family who came to Venice with Comm. Fra’ Francesco Boccadiferro, who was Receiver and then Grand Prior of Venice, who called his fellow citizen Domenico Japelli to act as secretary of the Grand Priory, a position he held for several years.

Domenico himself lived in the Priory Palace on the ground floor, towards the vegetable garden, and also rented the assets of the Grand Priory in Venice, Padua and Treviso.

Domenico Japelli had nine sons among whom we remember in particular Giuseppe (1783-1852) who was a famous engineer, architect and landscape architect, one of the greatest exponents of the neoclassical style in the Veneto; and Filippo (named in honor of his uncle) canon of Torcello, whom he professed in the Order of Malta as Chaplain of Obedience on 11 February 1798.
