Vincenzo Marcovich

BURIAL OF QM VINCENZO Q. TRIFON MARCOVICH FROM PERASTO ET DI M. PIERO ET LU. BROTHERS AND HIS HEIRS

MD.CXXVIII

Vincenzo or Vuko Marcovich, son of Tryphon and Paola Viscovich, belonging to a conspicuous family of Perast who had made his fortune with the contract of the customs of Shkodra and maritime trade, was in Venice when in 1624 the Turks during a raid killed his mother and took prisoner his other relatives who were freed only after the payment of a onerous ransom. Luca Marcovich, his brother, known as Milutin, when the Turks arrived had tried to hide his treasures by throwing them into the well. Taken prisoner and taken aboard a tartana, he found his cousin Jeluscia Perovich and to save her from turquoise attentions he presented himself to the leader of the expedition declaring to be her husband. After his release he used part of his wealth in alms and donations to the poor and churches, contributing in particular to the construction of a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Health where his mother Paola had died. Vincenzo Marcovich's tombstone was restored in 2020 with the contribution of the Association of Italian Dalmatians in the World under the Presidency of Franco Luxardo. In the coat of arms – strongly deteriorated – it seems to be seen a dextrocherio holding an object in his hand.
